Content and Textbooks

For more than a decade, Louisiana has approved, or “adopted,” textbooks and required school districts to purchase from this list. In 2012, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education repealed the requirement that school districts purchase from the approved list of textbooks. School districts may purchase the textbooks and instructional material, including digital content, that best meet the needs of their students.

  • The Department and BESE do not believe that any of the textbooks submitted this year were appropriately aligned to the Common Core Standards and forthcoming PARCC assessments. Although districts are free to purchase any textbooks and are not reliant on state adoptions, the Department does not recommend that districts invest in new materials because of significant misalignments to the Common Core State Standards and forthcoming state assessments. The 2012-2013 LDE Textbook Review provides a summary of the submitted texts and comments identifying the areas of misalignment to the Common Core State Standards by the state committee and the Louisiana Department of Education content specialists.

  • The state is currently reviewing its process for the upcoming 2013-2014 textbook adoption. The Department plans to continue its support to school districts by identifying resources that are confirmed as fully aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
