EnrollNOLA Enhancements Include Additional School and Program Choices and Additional Resources for Families with Special Enrollment Needs

NEW ORLEANS – In response to input from families and community,
EnrollNOLA is expanding school and program options, especially for pre-K and early childhood students, and providing additional resources for families with students needing special education services and English language learners.  EnrollNOLA is committed to ensuring that all students have fair, equitable access to all public schools in Orleans Parish. This commitment has led to a significant expansion in the number of schools and programs participating in OneApp from 69 schools in 2012 to approximately 150 schools and specialty programs now, an increase of more than 100 percent. Additional resources and three new full-time staff members have been added to assist families of students with special needs through the enrollment process along with providing interpretation and translation services for those with limited English proficiency.

For the fourth year in a row, EnrollNOLA has increased school options for New Orleans students and families. Over 100 K-12 programs and nearly 50 pre-kindergarten programs are included in this year’s OneApp application process, with a diversity of offerings ranging from college prep, STEM, gifted and talented, career/tech, accelerated programming, language immersion, music and the arts, and more. Three new charter schools launching for the 2015-2016 school are enrolling students through OneApp and an additional fourteen NSECD pre-K 4 programs are included in the application for the first time, representing an increase in choices of 47 percent for the families of our youngest students. Only nine public schools are not accessible through OneApp.

“For too long in this city, families with greater means were able to navigate a fractured enrollment system to enroll their students in the best public schools, while others were relegated to whatever schools had remaining seats,” said Patrick Dobard, RSD Superintendent. “Though the centralized EnrollNOLA system has resulted in significant improvements city-wide, true equity of access will not exist until all publicly funded schools in New Orleans are participating.”

In addition to increased choice in programs, EnrollNOLA is committed to ensuring all families, regardless of their English proficiency or their students’ needs, are able to find a quality placement for their child. This year, the OneApp application will be available online in full translation in Spanish and Vietnamese. School Choice Advisors fluent in Vietnamese and Spanish are also available at our Family Resource Centers to answer questions about the enrollment process and to assist families in completing a OneApp. EnrollNOLA has also expanded its team to include a full-time specialist focused on providing families of students with disabilities the comprehensive information they need to feel confident through the enrollment and registration processes.

"It is vital that limited English proficient families have access to all available enrollment information in order to fully take advantage of the options available," said Cristiane Rosales Fajardo, Education Organizer with VAYLA. “The availability of interpreters to assist with enrollment needs has been an important step forward in assuring equity of access for all of our families in New Orleans."
