Opportunities for Public Input and Timeline for Educator Committee Meetings Announced

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Education announced today the start of the 2015-2016 Louisiana Student Standards Review process for English language arts and mathematics, continuing the state’s tradition of professional reviews of students’ standards. The process, approved by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) in April, passed by legislators during the 2015 Legislative Session, and signed into law, empowers 101 educators and experts nominated by school districts, professional associations, and advocacy organizations to review and develop expectations for Louisiana students that will prepare them for college and career.

The current Louisiana Student Standards are available for review on the Louisiana Student Standards Review webpage. Educators, parents, and all other stakeholders will provide comment on the standards through an online Standards Review Portal that will launch July 8. A link to the online portal will be available on the Department’s website. All public comments received online will be shared with the Standards Review Committee and content subcommittee members. Additionally, members of the public may attend one of the many statewide meetings to share their feedback on how to improve instruction in Louisiana with the Department. Members of the public can also submit their comments in writing during each meeting.

“Our state found common ground in the simple idea that we trust professional educators to do what is right for students,” said State Superintendent John White. “The product these 101 volunteer educators and experts produce will reflect the years of experience and commitment they have given to the children of our state.”

The Louisiana Student Standards Review Process will be conducted as follows:

In June, BESE unanimously voted in support of 101 members nominated by districts and other organizations to serve on the Standards Review Committee and three content subcommittees. The Standards Review Committee will oversee and coordinate the 2015-2016 review process, monitor progress, ensure alignment across grade levels and subjects, and make final recommendations to BESE.  The three content subcommittees will review each set of standards (English language arts and math) in depth and propose standards to the Standards Committee for review.
