Supt. John White Testifies Before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions


February 6, 2014

Superintendent John White testifies before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions during the Supporting Children and Families through Investments in High-Quality Early Education hearing.  Supt. White detailed the work of the Early Childhood Care and Education Network Pilot Program, created by Act 3 of the 2012 Regular Legislative Session, to unify a fragmented early childhood education system in Louisiana.  When fully implemented in 2015-2016, the networks will expand access to high-quality, publicly-funded early childhood programs to families across Louisiana to ensure more children enter school kindergarten ready.

Jump Start Forum for Final Public Comment - Baton Rouge

State Superintendent of Education John White hosts a regional forum in Baton Rouge with parents, students, educators, community members, and industry leaders to hear final public comment on a draft proposal outlining the Jump Start initiative, a plan to better prepare Louisiana students for today’s economy by fostering collaboration between schools, businesses, and colleges.

Virtual Teacher Town Hall Meeting - Transition Policies

The Department recognizes that educators need time to learn the new Common Core State Standards and the tests associated with them.  As such, the Department and BESE have approved a set of transition policies that allow educators, parents, and students time to learn the new expectations.  Supt. John White hosts a virtual teacher town hall for all educators to explain these policies in detail and answer questions.

But will these reforms deliver on their promise and endure for generations to come, or will they become short-lived fads that at best underdeliver and at worst perpetuate the very problems they intended to solve? Louisiana’s education chief John White argues that today's reformers must be cautious not to create a status quo of their own and offers some thoughts from the field about instituting lasting change.

Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) Charter School Study

Governor Bobby Jindal and Superintendent John White announce a recent 26-state study by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University which found Louisiana is a national leader in student achievement at charter schools, ranking near the top in both reading and math gains.

Believe and Succeed Grant Recipient Announcement

August 1, 2013

The Louisiana Department of Education announced its most aggressive statewide push ever to turnaround low performing schools, providing grants to individuals, school districts, and charter school organizations to lead previously struggling schools that serve more than 18,000 students per year. The grant program, entitled Believe and Succeed, will generate up to 50 transformed schools totaling $5.8 million in funding.

Louisiana Teacher Leaders Kickoff Event

April 18-19, 2013

Nearly 2,000 educators, representing every school in the state, gathered in Lafayette for a two-day Teacher Leaders Kickoff event.  The event was designed to empower those closest to students to lead in the transition to more rigorous standards and assessments.  It was an opportunity for teacher leaders, principals, and district staff to share their suggestions for the transition and explore the Classroom Support Toolbox in detail.
