Parent Petition
In 2012, Louisiana enacted a law that allows parents with students in chronically low performing schools – schools graded D and F for three consecutive years – to petition the Louisiana Department of Education to transfer management of their school to the Recovery School District. The mission of the Recovery School District is to transform low-performing schools into high-performing schools.
Parents must use the official petition form provided by the Louisiana Department of Education and must designate a “Lead Petitioner.” To be considered for a transfer, more than 50% of parents or legal guardians of students enrolled in the school must sign the petition.
