One-Time, Transitional LEAP & iLEAP Test Questions to be Released over the Summer

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Education today announced that nearly 45,000 Louisiana students participated in field testing the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) assessments, allowing Louisiana students and educators an early view of forthcoming state tests. The total number represents one in every ten eligible students in the state from 600 schools in 68 districts and 20 charter operators. The two field test windows allowed for a “dry run” for schools and students one year in advance of the state’s move toward new expectations and tests that keep Louisiana competitive with states across the country.

“Louisiana educators have been providing input on this test for years, and this field test continues that process,” said State Superintendent John White. “Student surveys show that nearly 80 percent of Louisiana students prefer these online tests.”

The field testing is part of Louisiana’s gradual transition to higher standards and more challenging tests. In the 2013-2014 school year, students took one-time, transitional LEAP and iLEAP tests aligned with new academic expectations. Questions on these one-time, transitional tests are scheduled to be released later this summer for use by educators and families.

In 2015, Louisiana students will take the same English Language Arts and math assessments administered in a dozen other states, providing the first comprehensive assessment of the state’s educational competitiveness. Students in grades 3-4 will take the PARCC assessments on paper and students in grades 5-8 will take the computer-based version. Between 2015 and 2025, the state will gradually raise the bar for expected student achievement, requiring that a school rated ‘A’ have an average student performance of mastery (level 4 out of 5 on tests) by 2025. Since 1999 the state has used ‘basic’ (level 3 out of 5) as its achievement bar.

“In the tutorial sessions, students were excited to see the types of technology that would be available to them on the tests next school year,” said Amy Deslattes, Instructional Strategist and Teacher Leader. “Teachers are excited to look for ways to incorporate more technology in their classrooms next year as further test preparation.”

“For teachers at Iota Middle School, it was exciting to see our students engaged in these technology-based assessments. Our student feedback to our teachers was positive stating the test items reflected what they had been taught in their classes, and test items were comparable to those developed by our teachers,” said Lee Ann Wall, Iota Middle School Principal. “While we are eager for our summer break, we will continue supporting our teachers by planning through the summer for our third year of alignment of instruction to Common Core and the PARCC assessments.”

“I was amazed that it was not very hard to understand. I was impressed that tech is easy to understand,” said one 6th grade math student.
