Educator-led Committees to Review Comments in Public Meetings Starting Next Week

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Student Standards Review Portal received 29,809 pieces of feedback on the Louisiana Student Standards for English language arts (ELA) and mathematics as of August 5, the deadline for feedback to be considered at the first in a series of public Standards Review Committee meetings. The public comment portal, which will remain open through the fall, solicited comment as the first step in the Louisiana Standards Review Process approved by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) in April, passed by the Legislature during the 2015 Legislative Session, and signed into law by the Governor. The process will result in English and mathematics Louisiana Student Standards, to be adopted by BESE March 2016.

There were 723 unique individuals submitting comments during the four-week period since the portal opened on July 8. Given the option to identify in one category only, 60 percent of commenters identified themselves as educators, 23 percent as parents, 7 percent as K-12 district or school administrators, and the remaining as representatives of other education institutions or the general public. Representatives from nearly all parishes in Louisiana shared their feedback.

Every piece of feedback submitted has been posted to the BESE website and the Department of Education website. Members of the public can view all of the feedback submitted. The feedback portal will remain open through the review process for the public to continue sharing comments on the Louisiana Student Standards.

The next step in the Standards Review process is a meeting of the Standards Review Committees on Wednesday, August 19, at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center, 201 Lafayette Street in Baton Rouge, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. At this meeting, the educator committees will review the public comment in its complete form currently posted and also through a summary report by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). The public is encouraged to attend this meeting and provide additional comment on the standards in person for the committees.

During the month of October, three content subcommittees made up of professional educators from across the state will review the public comment and Louisiana’s standards to recommend elements of the standards to be modified, added, deleted, or maintained. All recommendations will be posted for public review. The subcommittees will then meet in October to discuss each member’s recommendations and propose a complete set of recommendations to the Standards Review Committee for consideration at its November 12 meeting.

Following the November meeting, the sub-committees will make final updates to the standards and submit a final proposed set of Louisiana standards to the Standards Review Committee at its February meeting. At that time, the Standards Review Committee will vote on the final set of proposed standards for consideration by BESE at its March board meeting. All feedback, recommendations, and minutes will be posted publicly before and after each meeting.
