Placing Life of 17-month-old in Danger Among Critical Violations Found

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Education today revoked the license of an early learning center in Belle Chasse and terminated its public funding. Department licensing staff acted on complaints concerning an October 15 incident and made a site visit to Booties and Bobbie Socks Day Care and Pre-K located at 105 Alpha Street in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. It was then a licensing staff member confirmed that the center director and employees left a 17-month-old child in New Orleans City Park following a field trip and failed to report the incident, as required by law.

“These individuals were negligent in the care of our children, putting a toddler in danger,” said State Superintendent John White. “We are fortunate the child was unharmed, but we will not tolerate carelessness like this, which places vulnerable and innocent children at risk.”

In addition to leaving the child unsupervised and alone at the park, the center did not conduct a vehicle passenger check prior to departing City Park, did not report the incident to the Department’s Licensing Division, and did not have current State Central Registry documentation for all of its employees, all critical violations of licensing laws and regulations.

This center is now ineligible for public funding through the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), which helps make child care more affordable for low-income families. The Department has alerted families affected by this action and will work closely with them to find alternative child care options for their children.

Booties and Bobbie Socks Day Care and Pre-K has 15 days from receipt of the notice of revocation to appeal the Department’s decision. Providers who have had their licenses revoked are ineligible to apply for licensure for two years. Operating a child care center without a license may result in an order to cease and desist, as well as an injunction from a court prohibiting the continued operation of a day care center without a license and placement on the statewide registry of individuals prohibited from operating a day care center.
