SUPERINTENDENT WHITE ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING GOVERNOR'S RESPONSE TO ESSA PLAN

Mar 24, 2017

BATON ROUGE, La.-  On Friday afternoon, State Superintendent John White issued a statement regarding the Governor's response to the state's plan to comply with the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) law. White said:

"We welcome public comment, including the Governor's comments. In the last nine months, the Department has conducted 136 meetings on this plan. Next week, BESE will consider the next step in the process by seeking federal feedback on the state's plan. In the summer, BESE will consider finalizing rules related to the plan. There is a great deal of time for further dialogue, and we appreciate the Governor lending his voice.

At the same time, the Governor's call for two more years of delay in delivering high expectations for Louisiana's children reflects an unfortunate trend of putting off the high standards that Louisiana's children deserve.

For four years, political processes have impeded raising the bar in evaluating the performance of Louisiana's schools. This must come to an end. We cannot delay any longer.

We look forward to further dialogue with the Governor's office, including another in a series of meetings to be held Tuesday, March 28, and we are thankful, as always, for the Governor's input. "
