Sessions Designed to Prompt Conversations on How Schools Can Ensure Meaningful Growth

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Louisiana Department of Education today announced the addition of a new speaker series to the lineup for the 2018 Teacher Leader Summit, a three-day professional development conference that will convene 7,000 educators statewide at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans May 30 through June 1. "Ed Talks," hosted by national thought leaders, is a series of sessions designed to prompt conversations and idea sharing on the conference's theme and the state's focus on how schools can ensure meaningful growth for "every child, every day."

This year's sessions will be led by Chris "Citizen" Stewart, President and CEO of the Wayfinder Foundation, a nonprofit that invests in grassroots anti-poverty and education activism, and Dr. Daniel Willingham, Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia and author of the "Ask the Cognitive Scientist" column for American Educator Magazine.

Stewart's presentation, "Before All Else: Closing the Gap," will discuss the national, contentious debate about the power of education and the obstacles to equitable educational results for American's black and LatinX students and the dangers of the "belief gap," defined as what marginalized children are capable of achieving versus what the adults in their lives think they can achieve.

Willingham's presentation, "Improving Reading Comprehension," will outline what scientists have uncovered about the mental processes of reading and how teachers can apply those findings in the classroom.

The "Ed Talks" sessions will be open to media and conference attendees only. Space is limited, so those interested in participating in the sessions are encouraged to arrive early. To follow along on social media, use the hashtag #LATeacherLeaders.
