RSD ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND PROGRAM FOR 2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR

Jul 11, 2012

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the Recovery School District (RSD) announced the launch of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Public School Choice program for the 2012-13 school year. This federal program requires that school districts offer families with children enrolled in underperforming schools the opportunity to transfer their child to a higher-performing school in the same district.

Families with children enrolled in schools identified as an Academically Unacceptable School (AUS) will be eligible to participate in the program. AUS status is determined according to achievement criteria set by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) during the 2011-2012 school year. The official AUS list will be released on July 24; eligible families will be notified immediately thereafter.

Participation in the program is optional. The NCLB Public School Choice Program Application, or Choice Request Form, will be mailed to eligible families. Families will have until August 15 to submit their application if they would like their child to be considered for transfer to a non-AUS school of their choice.

Families will receive notice of their transfer status by August 23, at which time they will have the opportunity to accept or decline their transfer offer. Those children whose families decline the new placement or do not participate in the program will remain enrolled at their current school.

The RSD encourages families to use their local Parent-Family Resource Centers as a resource throughout the process.
