Compass Toolbox


The Compass tool supports teachers and principals in defining expectations for student learning and monitoring progress against those goals throughout the year.

District leaders, principals and teachers each play an important role in the implementation of Compass.

District Leaders:


  • set schoolwide student growth goals
  • guide teachers to set student growth goals
  • observe, support, and evaluate teachers


  • set student growth goals
  • teach and monitor student learning
  • continue to improve


Principals are able to use multiple measures of student growth and observations to make adjustments to classroom instruction and to evaluate teachers at the end of the school year. Recent changes to the Compass tool ensure principals are empowered to make decisions that support quality teaching and learning.

The model below reflects these changes and outlines how end-of-year ratings are calculated with student growth and professional practice contributing equally to assign a rating.

Compass results inform educator workforce decisions at the school and district level including:

  • hiring and placement
  • compensation
  • retention, promotion and tenure
  • certification

Teacher Goal Setting (SLT)

Teachers set goals at the beginning of the year to establish a vision for what students should know or be able to do at the end of the year. These goals then guide instruction throughout the year. The following resources support teachers and principals as they work together to identify methods for setting goals that reflect the direction of the school. A collection of samples and supporting resources represent a variety of best practices for each step of the goal setting process. Further efforts were taken to develop samples that reflect teacher role, school programming and student population.

Observation & Feedback

Educators use the observation and feedback process to:

  • Assess and provide feedback on instructional skills and decisions
  • Assess how students are performing relative to goals (Student Learning Targets)
  • Determine a teacher’s strengths and areas for improvement
  • Develop clear next steps that support teacher improvement and ultimately increase student learning

Compass Information System (CIS)

The Compass Information System (CIS) is a web-based system that is available to districts and charter schools to support their implementation of Compass, the state’s educator support and evaluation system.

With the system:

  • Teachers, librarians, counselors, and leaders can establish student learning targets (SLTs) and share them with their evaluators and administrators.
  • Evaluators can perform observations on their assigned employees and review employee performance.
  • School districts and charters track Compass implementation and submit annual reports to the Louisiana Department of Education.
