Local Charter Authorizers are one component of Louisiana Believes – the Louisiana Department of Education’s mission to ensure that every child in Louisiana is on track to a college degree or professional career.

By becoming a Local Charter Authorizer, local organizations can directly create new educational opportunities for Louisiana’s students by authorizing new high-quality charter schools.

Non-profit organizations with an educational mission, post-secondary institutions, state agencies, or a nonprofit corporation established by the governing authority of a parish or municipality, may apply to become a Local Charter Authorizer.

Local Charter Authorizers will be uniquely positioned in Louisiana to specialize in the development, authorization, and oversight of high-quality charter schools in geographic areas with which they are intimately familiar.

The application to become a Local Charter Authorizer - which can be found in the sidebar to the right - includes all of the information that an applicant might need in order to successfully navigate the application process. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis and can be submitted at any time.

Before beginning to complete an application, we encourage groups to contact Department staff to learn more about being a Local Charter Authorizer. Please submit questions about the Local Charter Authorizer application process to brian.darrow@la.gov.
